How Thick Are Granite Slabs? 2 cm vs 3 cm Explained
How thick are granite slabs? Granite countertop slabs come in two standard thicknesses: 3 cm (about 1¼ inches) and 2 cm (about ¾ inch). In the United States, 3 cm is the most common choice for kitchen countertops. It is stronger, can usually be installed straight onto the cabinets, and gives a thicker edge. 2 cm is lighter and is often used for vanities, backsplashes and wall cladding. On countertops, 2 cm is usually installed over a plywood base with a built-up (laminated) edge.

2 cm vs 3 cm Granite at a Glance
| 3 cm granite | 2 cm granite | |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 30 mm, about 1¼ in (1.18 in) | 20 mm, about ¾ in (0.79 in) |
| Approximate weight* | About 16–17 lb per sq ft | About 11 lb per sq ft |
| Typical use | Kitchen countertops and islands | Vanities, backsplashes, walls, fireplace surrounds |
| Installation on cabinets | Usually set directly on the cabinets | Usually needs a plywood base for countertop use |
| Edge | Full 1¼ in edge from the slab itself | Often laminated (a strip glued under the edge) to look thicker |
| Overhangs | Supports longer overhangs | Needs support sooner |
| Seams | No lamination line on the edge | A laminated edge shows a fine line |
*Estimated from the typical density of granite (about 2.65–2.75 g/cm³). Actual weight varies by stone.
What Is the Standard Granite Thickness for Countertops?
For kitchen countertops in the U.S., the standard is 3 cm. Most slabs imported for kitchens are cut at this thickness. In our own slab catalog, the large majority of granite colors are 3 cm, and only a few come in 2 cm. The same holds for quartzite: most colors are 3 cm, with a smaller 2 cm selection.
2 cm is more common in Europe, and in bathrooms, backsplashes and wall applications, where weight matters more than an extra-thick edge.
Is 3 cm Granite Stronger Than 2 cm?
Yes. A 3 cm slab is half again as thick, which makes it much stiffer and less likely to crack over an unsupported span or around a sink cutout. That is why 3 cm can usually sit directly on the cabinet boxes. A 2 cm countertop is normally installed on a plywood subtop so the stone is supported along its whole length.
How far a countertop can overhang without brackets or corbels depends on the stone, the thickness and the layout. Your fabricator will tell you where supports are needed.

When Does 2 cm Granite Make Sense?
- Bathroom vanities, where spans are short and a slimmer top looks lighter.
- Full-height backsplashes and wall cladding, where weight on the wall matters.
- Fireplace surrounds and other vertical surfaces.
- A specific stone that you love and that only comes in 2 cm.
- A very thick edge look: a 2 cm countertop with a laminated (mitered) edge can be built up to 2 inches or more.
How Big Is a Granite Slab?
Thickness is only one dimension. A typical granite slab is about 127 × 78 inches (about 68 sq ft); exact sizes vary from block to block. Quartz comes in standard slabs of about 127 × 64 inches and jumbo slabs of about 138 × 79 inches. See our guide to slab sizes. That matters when you plan an island: if your island is longer than one slab, it will need a seam, so check slab sizes before you commit to a layout. The size of each slab is listed in the live inventory.
Does Thickness Change the Price?
Thickness affects the material, the weight to handle and how the edge is built, so it can affect the quote. Because pricing depends on the stone, the slab and the fabrication, ask your fabricator to quote 2 cm and 3 cm for the same layout if you are deciding between them.
Who Decides the Thickness for My Project?
You choose the look; your fabricator confirms what works for your cabinets, overhangs and edges. StoneX USA supplies full slabs. An independent fabricator measures, cuts, edges and installs the countertop. If you need one, see our fabricator partner locations. To compare stones, browse our granite slabs and quartzite slabs.

More questions, answered
How thick is 3 cm granite in inches?
About 1¼ inches (1.18 in). 2 cm granite is about ¾ inch (0.79 in).
How much does a granite countertop weigh?
Roughly 16–17 lb per square foot for 3 cm granite and about 11 lb per square foot for 2 cm, based on the typical density of granite. A 30-square-foot kitchen in 3 cm granite weighs about 500 lb.
Can you put 2 cm granite on kitchen cabinets?
Yes, usually over a plywood subtop that supports the stone along its length, with a laminated edge for a thicker look. Your fabricator will advise.
Is quartzite the same thickness as granite?
Yes. Quartzite slabs come in the same 2 cm and 3 cm thicknesses, and 3 cm is the most common for countertops.
