Honed vs Polished Quartzite: Look, Care and Which to Choose
Honed or polished quartzite? Polished quartzite has a glossy, reflective surface that deepens the stone’s color and makes the veining stand out. It is also the easiest finish to wipe clean. Honed quartzite is ground to a smooth matte or satin surface, with no shine. It looks softer and more natural and hides fine scratches, but it shows oil and water marks more easily and usually needs sealing more often. The stone’s hardness is the same with either finish. You are choosing a look and a level of care.

Honed vs Polished Quartzite at a Glance
| Polished | Honed | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Glossy, mirror-like | Matte to satin, smooth |
| Color and veining | Deeper, richer color; veining looks sharper | Lighter, softer look; veining appears more muted |
| Fingerprints and smudges | Show on dark stones in raking light | Less visible |
| Oil and water marks | Less likely; liquids bead on the surface | More likely; spills can leave dark marks until they dry |
| Fine scratches | More visible in the shine | Hidden by the matte surface |
| Sealing | Needed; often less frequent | Needed; often more frequent |
| Daily cleaning | Easiest to wipe clean | Easy, but wipe spills promptly |

What Is the Difference Between Honed and Polished?
Every quartzite slab starts with a rough, sawn surface. The factory then grinds it with a series of abrasive heads, from coarse to fine.
A polished finish keeps going through finer and finer abrasives until the surface reflects light like glass. Grinding it that far closes up the surface, which is why liquids tend to bead on polished stone.
A honed finish stops earlier. The surface is just as flat and smooth to the touch, but it has no shine. Because the surface is a little more open, honed stone can darken briefly where water or oil sits, which is why sealing matters more.
The finish does not change what the stone is. Honed and polished quartzite have the same hardness, the same heat resistance and the same scratch resistance.

Which Finish Is Better for a Kitchen?
For a busy kitchen where spills happen every day, polished is the lower-maintenance choice: liquids bead, and the surface wipes clean quickly. Polished also suits light stones where you want the veining to stand out. For light, marble-like quartzites to compare, see quartzite that looks like marble.
Honed suits homeowners who want a calm, natural look and do not mind sealing a little more often. It is popular on islands, in bathrooms and in modern or rustic designs. Honed finishes hide fine scratches and everyday wear better than polished ones.
If neither feels right, there is a third option. A leathered finish has a soft, textured surface that hides fingerprints and water spots well.
Is Honed Quartzite Harder to Maintain?
A little, mostly in how you handle spills. Wipe up oil, wine, coffee and tomato sauce promptly, and use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Do the water test every few months: put a few drops of water on the surface and wait about 10–15 minutes. If the stone darkens, reseal it. Honed surfaces usually reach that point sooner than polished ones.
One extra caution: some stones sold as quartzite are partly dolomite or marble and can etch (go dull) from acids. On polished stone an etch shows as a dull spot in the shine. On honed stone it is harder to see. If you are unsure, test a sample with a few drops of lemon juice before you decide.
Can You Change the Finish Later?
A polished countertop can be honed in place by a stone restoration specialist, and a honed surface can be polished again. It is specialist work, though, so it is better to choose the finish you want at the start. When you choose a slab, look at the actual finish on the full slab, not a small chip. The same stone can look quite different honed and polished.
Which Finishes Are Available?
Most quartzite slabs in our catalog come polished or leathered. A smaller number come honed. Availability changes with each shipment, so check the finish listed on each slab in the live inventory or browse the quartzite range. Examples include Blue Roma and Vancouver honed.
StoneX USA supplies the slabs. An independent fabricator cuts, edges and installs your countertop and can advise on the finish for your layout.
Homeowners can hand-select and tag slabs at the West Allis slab gallery on weekdays, by appointment only.
More questions, answered
Is honed quartzite more porous than polished?
The stone itself is the same, but a honed surface is slightly more open, so it can absorb spills a little faster. Keep it sealed and wipe spills promptly.
Does polished quartzite scratch?
Quartzite is very scratch resistant with either finish. On a polished surface any fine marks are easier to see in the shine.
Which finish is better for a bathroom vanity?
Both work well. Honed gives a soft, spa-like look; polished is easier to keep free of water spots and toothpaste marks.
Is leathered better than honed?
Leathered has a textured surface that hides fingerprints and water spots better than honed, but crumbs can settle in the texture. See our guide to leathered finishes.
